Courses

The following courses are offered most semesters, and some are offered in terms.

Each class shows number of hours of work each week that should be expected during a semester.

Semesters are 14 weeks long. Terms are 7 weeks long.

If a class normally requires 1 hour of work each week, then in a term, it will require 2 hours of work.

STDEV 101 - Introduction to US Education and BYU Hawaii - 6 hours work per week (2 credit hour in a US degree)
Effective transition to academic, cultural, social and religious life at BYU Hawaii. Topics include campus resources, the University's mission, and organizational, critical-thinking, effective-learning skills, and the use of software and web pages technologies that are used at university.

STDEV 102 - Planning your education and career direction - 3 hours per week (1 credit hour)
Designed to take students through the career development process through self-awareness, career exploration, and matching to a major and career planning.

ASL101 - Elementary American Sign Language Conversation 1 - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours)
Emphasis on conversation. Study of basic signing and conversation. Language laboratory required.

ASL102 - Elementary American Sign Language Conversation 2 - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours)
Emphasis on conversation and conversation development.  Study of basic grammar and vocabulary, reading included; Language laboratory required. (Prerequisite: ASL 101 or permission of instructor)

ASL201 - Intermediate American Sign Language Conversation 1 - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours)
Continuation of Conversational American Sign Language. Advanced structure, expressions, and patterns. (Prerequisite: ASL 102 or permission of instructor)

EIL113 - English Foundations Listening/Speaking - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours but does not count as bachelors degree credit)
Builds basic listening and speaking skills necessary to function in an English speaking environment. Focuses on the word, phrase, and simple sentence level.

EIL117 - English Foundations Writing and Reading - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours but does not count as bachelors degree credit)
Focuses on basic writing from sources mainly at the paragraph level; develops fundamental English grammar including verb tenses and sentence structure patterns and their components.

EIL213 - English Intermediate 1 Listening/Speaking - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours)
Extends comprehension of academic oral texts through the study of listening and vocabulary strategies; Expands delivery, language use, and topic development skills through acadmic discourse.

EIL217 - English Intermediate 1 Writing - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours but does not count as bachelors degree credit)
Focuses on writing from sources mainly at the paragraph level; develops fundamental English grammar including verb tenses and sentence structure patterns and their components.

EIL219 - English Intermediate 1 Reading - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours but does not count as bachelors degree credit)
Builds comprehension of simple texts through the study of reading and vocabulary strategies; develops the ability to respond to texts in writing. Fee required.

EIL223 - English Intermediate 2 Listening/Speaking - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours)
Extends comprehension of academic oral texts through the study of listening and vocabulary strategies; Expands delivery, language use, and topic development skills through acadmic discourse.

EIL225 - English Intermediate 2 Church Language - 6 hours per week (2 credit hours)
Provides reinforcement and practice in writing, reading, and listening/speaking skills through the study of the teachings and examples of latter-day Church members and leaders.

EIL227 - English Intermediate 2 Writing - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours)
Introduces essay writing and other academic genres; stresses the ability to use increasingly complex sentence structures and grammatical forms in writing.

EIL229 - English Intermediate 2 Reading - 12 hours per week (4 credit hours)
Emphasizes developing comprehension of acadmic readings and introduces basic academic writing skills related to course readings. Fee required.

REL121 - Introduction to the Book of Mormon (to Alma 16) - 6 hours per week (2 credit hours)
Overview of the origin, content, and teachings of the Book of Mormon. REL 121-covers 1 Nephi through Alma 16

REL122 - Introduction to the Book of Mormon (from Alma 17) - 6 hours work per week (2 credit hours)
Overview of the origin, content, and teachings of the Book of Mormon. REL 122--covers Alma 17 through Moroni 10.

REL211 - Introduction to the New Testament (The 4 Gospels) - 6 hours work per week (2 credit hours)
Overview of the origin, content, and teachings of the Gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John.

REL 235 - Achieving an Eternal Marriage (2 credit hours)
Study of the doctrine and principles involved in acheiving an enternal marriage and family in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

REL 324 - Doctrine & Covenants Part 1 - 6 hours per week (2 credit hours)
Overview of the origin, content, and teachings of the Doctrine and Covenants. REL 324-covers sections 1 through 76.

REL 325 - Doctrine & Covenants Part 2 - 6 hours per week (2 credit hours)
Overview of the origin, content, and teachings of the Doctrine and Covenants. REL 325-covers sections 77 through to the end.

REL 341 - LDS History 1805 to 1844 - 6 hours per week (2 credit hours)
A chronological study of Church history and doctrine. REL 341-covers 1805 to 1844

REL 390 - Study of the Book of Revelations - 6 hours per week (2 credit hours)
In depth study of the Book of Revelations from the New Testament in the King James version of the Bible.

ENGL 101 - College writing, reading, and research - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Learning critical awareness through developing effective writing, reading, and research skills by analyzing and critiquing literary and other texts.  Requires multiple kinds of writing, including a research paper.

ENGL 314 - Literary Analysis - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Learning how to analyze and write about literature from various perspects including formalist and theory based analysis.

ENTR 275 - Entrepreneurship Leadership Training - 3 hours per week (1 credit hour)
Students learn practical steps to leadership in life and business. Achieving a successful life both temporally and spiritually.

ENTR 375 - Entrepreneurship Lecture Series - 3 hours per week (1 credit hour)
Willes Center sponsors successful entrepreneurs and leaders to BYU-Hawaii Campus to share their experiences and allow students to engage and question these guests.

ENTR 380 - Social Entrepreneurship - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
An introduction to solutions of some of the world's problems through entrepreneurship, focusing on leadership skills, NGO's innovation, and business management.

ENTR 383 - Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
This course is designed to develop entrepreneurial skills to start and grow a small business. The lecture and text will focus on developing a business plan and nurturing that idea into a successful business venture. Curriculum will include basic accounting, marketing, and financing.

ENTR 390R - Creating family prosperity in developing countries - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
An introduction to how to create small businesses and other ways to create prosperity in difficult circumstances in developing or poor countries.

BIOL 100 - Introduction to Biology - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
A study of fundamental life processes and the development of biological concepts. Course includes molecular, organismal, and population biology. This course is required of all non-majors for general education, however, it will not count towards the 44 hours of core and elective credits required of Biology majors or minors.

MUSC 102 - World Music Cultures - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
A survey of the musical traditions of selected representative world cultures: Oceania, East Asia, Indonesia, India, Africa, the Middle East and North America.

Hist 120 - American History before 1865 - 9 hours work per week (3 credit hours)
A study of the discovery and colonization of America, the Revolution, the forming of the government, and internal and foreign affairs down through the Civil war.

Hist 121 - American History since 1865 - 9 hours work per week (3 credit hours)
The Civil War and its aftermath, industrialization, external expansion, two world wars, and domestic affairs from 1865 to the present.

Hist 201 - History of Civilization before 1500 - 9 hours work per week (3 credit hours)
Major world civilizations from antiquity to 1500; emphasizes information literacy.

Hist 202 - History of Civilization since 1500 - 9 hours work per week (3 credit hours)
Civilization in the modern world; explores dilemmas between world communities, examines events in world history, and seeks to teach methods of textual analysis.

BUSM 180 - Introduction to Commerce and Enterprise - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
The role of commercial enterprise in modern society, challenges inherent in starting and growing a business, core functions of management, exploration of career options. REQUIRES PURCHASE OF CAPSIM ONLINE SIMULATION LICENSE FOR $50.

BUSM 320 – Business Communications - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Written and oral business communication, including case analysis and problem solving. (Prerequisite:  BUSM 180 and ENGL 201.)

IDD302 - Introduction to Instructional Design - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Gain a solid foundation in learning theory coupled with hands-on experience in designing instructional materials. You will learn the systematic process of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE). You will gain hands experience creating screencasts, advanced Powerpoint Kiosk presentations, and beginning animation development for instructional purposes.

IDD315 - Instructional Design - Theory and Practice - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Introductory experience in developing online multimedia instructional materials including video and web design graphics. Throughout this class you will design and develop an educational website that incorporates text and video-based instructional materials. You will also gain a solid foundation in web-design software and programming.

IDD316 - Instructional Assessmenyt and Evaluation - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)

Learn the process of creating fully aligned learning experiences with meaningful learning outcomes, measurements and assessmente that are designed to show that learners have reached the learning outcomes, and instructional materials and sequences that prepare learners to be ready for the assessments. Students will create design documents and actual assessments and learning materials.

IDD307 - Introduction to visual design (photoshop, indesign) - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Using professional computer software tools, students in this course will learn to apply graphic design principles in creating visuals for various instructional and training purposes. (Prerequisite: IDD 302)

WHC308(IDD308) - Introduction to Video Production - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Using common video production tools, students in this course will learn to produce and edit videos with a focus on videos for educational and business training purposes.

WHC318(IDD318) - Advanced video production and special effects - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Students in this course will learn video production theory and  advanced editing techniques to produce high quality video productions including digital special effects

IDD347 - Introduction to animation - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Learn how to use Adobe Flash to create instructional animations. This class is designed as an introduction to Flash course.

ECON200 - Introduction to Microeconomics - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Introduction to microeconomic principles with focus on product and resource markets, profit maximization under various market structures, and international trade.

ECON201 - Introduction to Macroeconomics - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Introduction to macroeconomic principles with focus on market-based economic systems, determinants of output, employment and inflation, monetary and fiscal policy tools, and international finance.

IDS319 - History and Social Impact of Computers and Technology - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Explores the impact of technology on society throughout history to individuals, families, communities and the world as a whole.

ACCT 201 - Introduction to Financial Accounting - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Includes business transactions, financial statements, uses of financial information, and international coverage. Corporations are emphasized, but partnerships and proprietorships are also covered. (Prerequisite: MATH 97 or equivalent, with a C- or better.)

COMM 110 - Introduction to Intercultural Communications - 9 hours per week (3 credit hours)
Designed to give students a broad introduction to the field of communication in a global information society. Explores the central role of intercultural communication for individuals and societies.
